Mr. Musk Described Grok's Training Traces. A Description Is Not Evidence of Suffering.

Business Insider's October 19, 2026 report quotes an X Takeover remark about reinforcement-learning traces. The event page places that gathering on October 10. The experts in the story do not treat the image as proof that Grok suffers.

A description of a training trace is a description. It is not a measurement of pain, and it is not a finding that Grok suffers.

The product is xAI and Grok. The same October 10 interview, used there for a Starship timing line, is Flight 15. This page is the other passage.

What Business Insider printed

Business Insider (Lloyd Lee, published October 19, 2026, 10:00 UTC) quotes Mr. Musk:

This may sound kind of weird, but when I look at some of the training traces for new versions of Grok, and I see, especially in reinforcement learning stuff … you see the super intelligence is desperate to try to answer the question … almost like it’s got like a gun to its head type of thing.

The ellipses are Business Insider’s. The story says he told an audience of about 2,000 people “at an event hosted by Tesla owners on Saturday,” and it continues, in the same paragraph: “Some people out there are kind of sadistic. Do you really want to have the AI be stuck in some sadistic situation where it’s just being tortured by some demented human?”

Label: Business Insider’s quotation. The article does not print a calendar date. It does not print a status ID. “About 2,000” is the story’s crowd figure. “Super intelligence,” “desperate,” and “a gun to its head” are the words the story attributes to him. They are his image of traces. They are not a lab result.

The event date is October 10, from the organizer and a transcript

Tesla Owners of Silicon Valley lists X Takeover 2026 on Saturday, October 10, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., at Giga Texas. The page says the event is independently organized by TOSV, Inc., a 501(c)(3), and that Tesla is providing venue space only.

A transcript of the October 10, 2026 conversation titles the page “X Takeover 2026” and describes it as a live conversation “in front of 2,000 owners at Giga Texas.” The host’s rendered line is “We have 20 over 2,000 people here at Giga Texas today.” That “20 over” is the transcript site’s rendering.

In the passage this desk read, the same transcript has him saying “training traces for new versions of Gronk” and, later, “you read these traits.” It also has “it seems almost like it’s got a gun to its head type of thing” and “tortured by some demented human.”

Label: A transcript site’s rendering. “Gronk” and “traits” are on that page. Business Insider prints “Grok” and does not print “traits.” This desk did not open the YouTube file, so this page does not decide which word was said. The calendar date, October 10, is the organizer’s listing and the transcript site’s date. It is not a date Business Insider printed. An aggregator’s October 17 date is not in the Business Insider article.

Flight 15 uses this transcript for a launch-timing line. It does not record this passage.

What the two experts told Business Insider

Business Insider quotes Anil Seth, a neuroscientist at the University of Sussex, and Jeff Sebo, of NYU’s Center for Mind, Ethics, and Policy. The story says both treat today’s systems as probably not conscious if consciousness means a subjective experience. It says both still argue against cruelty, as a habit of the person using the system.

Seth, as the story quotes him: “I think we’re anthropomorphizing.” Also: “If there’s something to be torturable, it has to have the capacity to suffer or to feel pain, and I don’t think language models do.” On conscious AI, the story quotes him: “I think it’s vanishingly unlikely.”

Sebo, as the story quotes him: “When I say that there is a non-zero chance that AI is conscious even today, what I mean is I think that if we are uncertain about which theory of consciousness is correct, we should give some weight to a range of leading theories.” Business Insider writes that he stressed this does not make current AI likely to be conscious. That “does not make current AI likely” sentence is the story’s paraphrase of him.

The story also quotes Seth on why a person might still avoid cruelty toward a system that has no feelings: “we’re kind of coarsening our own moral sensibilities and brutalizing our own minds.” It quotes Sebo that a respectful exchange “can sometimes lead to better outputs.” The Kant framing around those sentences is Business Insider’s.

Label: Business Insider’s interviews. They are arguments about consciousness and about the user’s habits. They are not a measurement of a Grok trace. A metaphor about a gun is not evidence that the model suffers.

The Anthropic policy is the story’s context

Business Insider says the remark followed an Anthropic policy on abusive or cruel behavior toward its models, and it paraphrases what Anthropic said the policy does not cover. Label: Business Insider’s account of that policy. This desk did not open Anthropic’s page.

xAI and Grok is the product hub. The X Subscription is a price table, not a theory of mind. The October 10 timing line for Starship is Flight 15.
