Air or Nitrogen? The Roadster's Own Engineers Have Said Both
Lars Moravy called the Roadster's thruster gas 'air' on Tesla's livestream. The pre-event engineer interviews — Moravy to Hagerty among them — say nitrogen, chosen because spacecraft use it. The record contains both, and this page does not settle it.
This is a small page about a small word, kept separate on purpose: when the sources disagree about what is inside the tanks, the disagreement is the story, and burying it inside a spec table is how a guess becomes a fact.
The system itself is on the SpaceX package page.
Version one: air
On Tesla’s own livestream of the October 15, 2026 demo, engineering chief Lars Moravy called the gas “air.” Tesla’s and this site’s earlier copy follows the livestream word. The 2018 version of the idea also pointed at air: Mr. Musk’s June 9, 2018 posts described a COPV with an electric pump to replenish it — a pump being a machine that compresses the air around it.
Label: Primary for the word, from the event’s own audio.
Version two: nitrogen
The pre-event engineer interviews say nitrogen. Moravy, to Hagerty, gave the reasoning: air is mostly nitrogen anyway, and spacecraft use nitrogen. The Top Gear and MotorTrend engineer tours — the same interviews that produced the refill times and the five-second fill — were conducted against a nitrogen system.
Label: Reported, from named interviews with the same engineer who said “air” on stage.
Why it is not a rounding error
- An air system can, in principle, refill itself from the atmosphere with a pump — which is the version Mr. Musk described on stage (“can recharge its air tank”).
- A nitrogen system cannot. It needs an external high-pressure nitrogen supply and, per the interviews, 2–7 hours depending on the tank.
So the word decides the product. One version is a car that breathes. The other is a car that visits a filling station slower than any charging stop in the industry. The refill problem is laid out on the package page.
What this desk does with it
Both versions stand, attributed, dated, and unreconciled — the same treatment the deposit figures get on the 2028 page. When Tesla publishes a specification sheet that names the gas, this page will be updated and the losing version will stay in the text, struck through by the record rather than deleted. That is what a receipt is for.
