Three Roadsters: Performance, Thrust, and the Rocket You Cannot Drive on the Road

Tesla's 2026 Roadster comes in three claimed trims: Performance with fans only, Thrust with 4 thrusters and a 200-liter tank, and Rocket with 10 thrusters, 600 liters, one seat — and, in Tesla's own words, not approved for public road use.

One reveal, three cars. The demo of October 15, 2026 blurred them into a single white prototype; the sales story separates them, and the separation is where the product actually lives. The event is on the reveal page; the hardware is on the package page.

Label for the whole table: Tesla’s claims and the engineer-interview record, as reported. No trim has a published Tesla specification sheet; figures below are attributed in the text and nowhere upgraded.

Performance — the road car

  • Fans only. The suction system (see the fan car page), no thrusters, no tanks.
  • Two seats, road-ready, claimed 0–60 under 1.6 seconds.
  • This is the only trim that is unambiguously a car in the ordinary legal sense — and its headline technology is 1970s suction, not rocket thrust.

Thrust — the hop, with a trunk

  • 4 rear thrusters, one 200-liter tank in the trunk.
  • Claimed 0–60 under 0.9 seconds.
  • One fill: about five seconds of thrust (the five-seconds page). Refill: 2–6 hours, external supply.

Rocket — the demo configuration

  • 10 thrusters. A second, 400-liter tank replaces the passenger seat: 600 liters total, roughly 250 kg of gas, one seat.
  • Invite-only.
  • Claimed 0–60 figures run to under 0.59 seconds in Wikipedia and explainer sourcing — one grade below the 0.81 Tesla’s own screen showed at the demo, which is graded on the demo timeline page.
  • “Not approved for public road use” — Tesla’s own site’s words for this trim, off-road only.

The fourth car

A cheaper base version surfaced only in the pre-event Top Gear interview. It appears in no Tesla material in the record. Label: Reported, single-source family (the engineer interviews), and listed here so the count of trims in future coverage can be checked against it.

The rest of the claimed sheet

  • Top speed: over 230 mph, claimed — against over 250 mph promised in 2017.
  • Range: about 310–320 miles, per Moravy and von Holzhausen to Top Gear — against 620 miles promised in 2017.
  • Weight target: under 1,700 kg. Power: over 1,341 hp in top versions, per InsideEVs via Top Gear.
  • Layout: rear-wheel drive, dual rear motors — a change from 2017’s tri-motor all-wheel drive. A fixed roof with lift-out door glass panels; a T-top in effect.

Every one of those lines is a claim with a name on it. The page that asks what would turn them into a car is the 2028 page.
