Risk tolerance
Lesson playbook — calculated risk, public failure, and the difference between boldness and negligence.
Topics: lessons
Risk tolerance in the Musk map is high on learning-critical paths and (in theory) constrained where third parties can be harmed.
Pattern
Accept public failure when the data gained compounds faster than reputation cost — especially in rockets and early autonomy. Do not treat that as a license for negligence.
Playbook
- Name the worst-case harm class (crew, public road users, capital only).
- Cap downside with abort systems, supervision, staged rollout.
- Prefer reversible bets for brand/narrative risks.
- Document decision owner and kill criteria before launch.
- Separate “we accepted this engineering risk” from “we violated a rule.”
Examples (labeled)
| Domain | Pattern | Label |
|---|---|---|
| Early Falcon/Starship tests | Explosions as learning | Flight event history |
| FSD rollout | Supervised product naming + geo expansion | Product + regulatory |
| Entrepreneurship | Personal capital and reputation at stake | Biographical narrative |
Failure modes
- Externalizing risk onto unconsenting public
- Heroic storytelling after avoidable harm
- Ignoring regulators as “haters”
