Mr. Musk's 2026 Midterm Money: The September Filings.

FEC itemized filings show $158 million from Elon Musk to SLF PAC in September, moved the next day to Texas PAC, plus his America PAC quarter. Other totals came from his representatives, not from those lines.

Elon Musk’s name is on Federal Election Commission itemized lines for the quarter that ended September 30, 2026. The lines this desk opened show $75 million on September 9 and $83 million on September 23 to SLF PAC, and they show SLF PAC sending those same amounts to Texas PAC on the next day each time. A set of round totals that circulated before the filings, including a roughly $366 million cycle figure, came from Mr. Musk’s representatives. Those are not the same grade of fact.

This page is the receipt. It sits on the politics desk.

SLF PAC, from the October quarterly

SLF PAC, committee C00571703, filed its October quarterly on October 15, 2026. Filing 2025770. Coverage July 1 through September 30, 2026. The electronic summary line and the FEC filings index both put total receipts for the period at $272,944,766.79. The same summary line reconciles: cash at the start of the period $238,609,688.14, plus those receipts, is $511,554,454.93. Disbursements $356,184,728.09 leave cash on hand at the close of $155,369,726.84.

Label: Confirmed from the F3XN summary in the itemized file and from the filings index, which reports the same receipt total. CNBC (Luke Fountain, October 15) rounded the haul to $272.9 million and the cash to more than $155 million.

The two individual lines, Schedule A, contributor Musk, Elon, Austin, employer Space Exploration Technologies Corp., occupation CEO:

DateAmountAggregate on the lineLabel
September 9, 2026$75,000,000$158,000,000Confirmed, filing 2025770
September 23, 2026$83,000,000$158,000,000Confirmed, filing 2025770

Label: Confirmed. $158 million is the aggregate those two lines print. It is money the committee reported receiving from him. It is not, by itself, a statement of which candidate the advertisements named.

The transfer to Texas PAC

SLF PAC’s Schedule B in the same file shows two contributions to Texas PAC, committee C00960211:

DateAmountLabel
September 10, 2026$75,000,000Confirmed disbursement
September 24, 2026$83,000,000Confirmed disbursement

Texas PAC’s own October quarterly, filing 2025952, reports total receipts of $158,000,000. Its Schedule A shows the matching receipts from SLF PAC, C00571703, on September 10 and September 24. The FEC committee record lists Texas PAC as a super PAC, first file date August 28, 2026.

Label: Confirmed that the dollars moved, one day after each receipt from Mr. Musk, from SLF PAC to Texas PAC, and that Texas PAC’s quarter is those two receipts. The memo on the lines this desk read says “CONTRIBUTION.” It does not say Ken Paxton.

CBS News (Joe Walsh, updated October 16, 2026) says the money went to a group that supports Ken Paxton, and that Texas PAC reported over $100 million in spending for Paxton and against James Talarico. CNBC’s October 15 story calls Texas PAC “an affiliated Texas PAC created to support Republican Ken Paxton.” The BBC (Ana Faguy, October 18, 2026) says SLF “quickly sent the money on to a group supporting Texas Republican Ken Paxton.”

Label: The next-day, same-dollar transfers are confirmed. “Supporting Paxton” is how those outlets describe the committee. This desk did not itemize Texas PAC’s independent expenditures, so the candidate purpose stays reported.

America PAC, from its own quarterly

America PAC, committee C00879510, filing 2026216, October 15, 2026, reports total receipts for the quarter of $88,866,369.13. Every itemized receipt from Musk, Elon, in that file, same Austin address pattern, same employer and CEO occupation, adds to that same figure. The cash lines:

DateAmountLabel
July 6, 2026$2,000,000Confirmed
August 7$7,000,000Confirmed
August 14$4,400,000Confirmed
August 21$15,500,000Confirmed
August 27$13,400,000Confirmed
September 4$11,600,000Confirmed
September 21$15,000,000Confirmed
September 28$13,900,000Confirmed

Those eight cash lines total $82,800,000. Six more lines, all dated September 30 and marked in-kind, with partnership-attribution memos, total $6,066,369.13: petition administration $6,805; data analytics, voter modeling, survey research, and subscriptions $3,770,193; voter data, petition administration, and web services $2,190,990.13; petition incentives $20,645; travel $2,736; political strategy consulting $75,000.

Label: Confirmed as the itemized lines. Adding them is arithmetic on the file, and the sum equals the committee’s reported quarterly receipts. The aggregate printed on the lines, $90,974,415.69, is the schedule’s running aggregate. It is larger than the quarter because it includes earlier money. Do not quote it as the third-quarter gift.

Two more filings, and two amounts that are not on them

Lone Star Liberty PAC, C00901223, filing 2027860, itemizes one relevant receipt: Elon Musk Revocable Trust, August 21, 2026, $10,000,000, aggregate $10,000,000. The contributor on the line is the trust, not the individual “MUSK, ELON” used on the SLF lines.

CLF, committee C00504530, filing 2027985, itemizes Musk, Elon, September 4, 2026, $20,000,000, memo “NON CONTRIBUTION ACCOUNT.” The FEC committee record this desk retrieved names the committee CLF. CNBC on October 12 and CBS call that $20 million a contribution to the Congressional Leadership Fund, which they describe as the main super PAC for House Republicans.

Label: The $10 million trust receipt and the $20 million CLF receipt are confirmed on those filings. The words “Congressional Leadership Fund” are the outlets’ name for the CLF committee.

On October 12, before describing a Thursday filing deadline, CNBC (Luke Fountain) said figures provided by Mr. Musk’s representatives to The New York Times, and confirmed to CNBC by Lindsey Curnutte, a spokesperson for America PAC, included more than $76 million to America PAC, $10 million to the Republican Governors Association, and $2 million to the Republican Attorneys General Association. The same account is the source of “more than $276 million” since July and “roughly $366 million” in known federal giving for the 2025–26 cycle, against about $290 million in 2024.

Label: Claimed. Those sentences are what CNBC says the representatives and Curnutte provided. The later America PAC filing itemizes $82.8 million in cash and $88.9 million including in-kind, which is more than the “more than $76 million” in that October 12 story. This desk did not find the $10 million governors figure or the $2 million attorneys general figure on the SLF, America PAC, Lone Star Liberty, or CLF itemized files it opened. It did not open an IRS filing for those two. They stay as the representatives’ figures.

CNBC also quoted Mr. Musk in May 2025: “In terms of political spending, I’m going to do a lot less in the future.” Label: Reported by CNBC. This desk did not open the May 2025 interview.

What the BBC added on October 18

Ana Faguy’s BBC story, October 18, 2026, says Mr. Musk donated upwards of $200 million in the quarter that ended September 30, “according to Federal Election Commission filings reviewed by the BBC,” that $158 million went to SLF, and that he donated more than $80 million to America PAC. The itemized lines above are the finer record: $158 million to SLF is exact, and the America PAC quarter is the $88.9 million sum, of which $82.8 million is cash.

The BBC quotes political analyst Cayce Myers: “Republicans have a fundraising advantage this time, but fundraising by itself does not actually guarantee success.” A second Myers passage, about tech leaders wanting a lighter regulatory environment, is his analysis. Label: Analyst view, as the BBC quoted him. The story’s third section, on other tech donors including Greg and Anna Brockman, is the BBC’s frame. It is not one of his disbursements.

CBS quoted America PAC spokesperson Andrew Romeo: “If Democrats take control of Washington and win key gubernatorial and attorney general races this November, then America risks becoming a socialist, woke and borderless country. These robust investments have allowed the G.O.P. apparatus to get its message out so Republicans can have a fighting chance to defy history.” Label: The PAC’s statement, as CBS published it. It is an argument about the spending. It is not a line on a filing.

A Bloomberg story dated October 15, Bill Allison and Dana Hull, headlined the $158 million and the Texas Senate race. The full text was not available. CBS, CNBC, and the filings are the account used here.

On the map

This is campaign money reported to the FEC, and a set of larger round numbers that his representatives gave reporters. It is not a DOGE action. The October 2026 interview about debt, AI, and robots is a different politics page: Isaacson and the debt. The politics hub is the section.
