Tommy Robinson's Trial Opened at Southwark. The £400,000 Is His Claim.

The trial opened October 19, 2026, at Southwark Crown Court, on two harassment counts. He has pleaded not guilty. The BBC and PA report his claim that Mr. Musk funded the fees. The Guardian's report does not mention Mr. Musk. No confirmation from Mr. Musk was retrieved.

This is an ongoing criminal trial in England. The sentences below are what three news reports say about the opening day at Southwark Crown Court. They are not a verdict, and this page does not comment on guilt.

The section is the politics desk.

What the court reporting says

The court, the charges, and the pleas

The trial opened on Monday, October 19, 2026, at Southwark Crown Court.

BBC News (Daniel Sandford, at the court, and Louise Parry) reports that Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, known as Tommy Robinson, is 43 and from Bedfordshire. It says he is charged with two counts of harassment causing fear of violence towards Daily Mail reporters Andrew Young and Jacob Dirnhuber. It says he entered not guilty pleas in July last year. Prosecutor Ben Holt opened the case. The judge, Mr Justice Cavanagh, told the jury:

This is not a trial about or an assessment of the defendant’s political views.

The BBC says the trial is expected to last five days. It describes him as a political activist who founded the English Defence League.

The Guardian (Ben Quinn, first published October 19, 2026, 08:33 EDT, updated 12:36 EDT) reports the same court, the same two journalists, and two counts of harassment causing fear of violence, which he denies. The Guardian’s wording for the complainants is “two MailOnline journalists,” and the story also says the Daily Mail and Mail Online. It says he is 42. It does not say Bedfordshire. It says the trial was adjourned until Tuesday morning. October 19, 2026, was a Monday, so “Tuesday morning” in that story is the next morning. That reading is this desk’s calendar. The Guardian does not print the date October 20.

PA, carried by The Independent (October 19, 2026, 18:40 BST) says he is 43 and is charged with two counts of harassment causing fear of violence to MailOnline reporters Andrew Young and Jacob Dirnhuber, through his X account, between August 5 and 7, 2024. It says he entered not guilty pleas in July last year. It says the trial is expected to last five days and that it continues.

Label: Three reports of one opening day. The BBC and PA say 43. The Guardian says 42. This page does not pick an age. “July last year,” in stories dated October 19, 2026, points at July 2025. That is a reading of their phrase. This desk did not open a plea transcript. The not-guilty pleas are what the BBC and PA report. The Guardian’s word is “denies.”

The BBC’s “Daily Mail reporters,” the Guardian’s “MailOnline journalists,” and PA’s “MailOnline reporters” are each outlet’s wording for the same two names.

The prosecution’s opening is an allegation

All three reports describe what Ben Holt told the jury: that the case is about the defendant’s reaction to Daily Mail and MailOnline coverage of a holiday in Cyprus, and that the prosecution says posts, messages, and a phone call frightened the two journalists. Those are the prosecution’s allegations, as the outlets report the opening. The BBC quotes the judge’s instruction, above. PA says his case is that he acted to protect his family. None of the three reports is a finding that any of that happened.

Label: Opening speeches, reported. An opening speech is not a conviction. This page does not adopt the prosecutor’s adjectives, and it does not assess the defense.

The fee claim

The funding sentence is his claim, as two outlets report an X post. The Guardian article does not mention Mr. Musk, a funder, or any fee.

The BBC says he posted on X before the trial began to thank the social media platform’s owner Elon Musk for funding his case, and said his court fees to date had cost him £400,000.

PA, in The Independent, says he posted on X before the trial began to thank “Tesla owner Elon Musk” for funding his legal fees, saying his court fees to date have cost him £400,000.

Label: His claim, as those two reports describe a post this desk did not open. “Funding his case” is the BBC’s wording. “Funding his legal fees” is PA’s. Both print £400,000 as his figure for court fees to date. The figure is his, as they report the post. It is not an invoice, a court costs order, or a payment record this desk saw.

This desk did not open the X post. It did not retrieve a post by Mr. Musk confirming a payment, a gift, or a fee. No confirmation from Mr. Musk is on this page.

On the map

The politics hub is the section. This page is one trial’s opening day and one reported claim about fees. It is not a campaign-finance filing, and it is not a finding about the charges.
