Summary

Elon Musk and T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert announced a plan to cover cellular dead zones with Starlink. The coverage gap they cited: more than 20 percent of U.S. land area and 90 percent of the Earth without terrestrial wireless service. The first service described is text, including SMS, MMS, and participating apps, across the continental United States, Hawaii, parts of Alaska, Puerto Rico, and territorial waters, including places outside T-Mobile’s own signal. A beta in selected areas was targeted for the end of 2023, after planned satellite launches. Voice and data were explicitly later.

Other carriers were invited to join, with T-Mobile offering reciprocal roaming to partners. SpaceX published direct2cell@spacex.com for operators and regulators. Nothing in the post says a phone on the ground could already use the service that day.

Why it matters

This is the start of the direct-to-cell thread that the 2025 EchoStar spectrum post and the 2026 Starlink Mobile post continue. The 2022 product is messaging. Later posts claim a much larger network. Keep the dates attached.
