Summary
SpaceX said Terafab, announced earlier with Tesla as a logic, memory, and packaging effort, will be built in Grimes County, Texas. The company said Tesla had already broken ground in April on a research fab on the north campus of Giga Texas, and described that site as the precursor. The Grimes County plant is presented as the large factory: more than 100 million square feet of manufacturing space in the plan, covering manufacturing, packaging, and testing of logic and memory.
SpaceX’s demand case is a company forecast, not a measured order book: combined SpaceX and Tesla chip demand “in excess of 1 terawatt” of compute, which it said is far above current global supply. Products named for the output are edge and inference chips for Optimus and Cybercab, and high-power chips for space-based data centers.
The Texas economic figures in the post are also company estimates: more than 56,000 direct and indirect jobs from the SpaceX Texas footprint, more than $28 billion in estimated economic impact since 2024, and hundreds of millions in indirect tax revenue since 2024. Terafab itself is described as at least 3,000 jobs, with 60 to 80 percent of new hires at other Texas sites said to be local. The initial capital figure is about $16.8 billion from SpaceX and Tesla, with later phases described only as “much higher.”
Environmental commitments listed are company promises: industrial water from Gibbons Creek Reservoir rather than local groundwater, on-site wastewater treatment, reuse, and compliance with pollution rules.

Why it matters
This is the chip plant sitting under both the space-based compute argument and Tesla’s robot and Cybercab hardware story. Treat the square footage, the terawatt demand line, and the job totals as plans and estimates. The Optimus page already separates production targets from deployed robots; chips “designed for” Optimus are not Optimus deliveries.
